On the morning of December 5, the advisory committee meeting between Wuhan University (WHU) and the Confucius Institute Metropolis Ruhr (CIMR) was held at WHU’s Administration Building. Tang Qizhu, vice president of WHU, and Karen Shire, vice president of the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE), attended and spoke at the meeting.

Tang Qizhu warmly welcomed the delegation from UDE and the CIMR. He said that the two sides have a long history of collaboration. The CIMR, jointly established by UDE and WHU, has also made remarkable contributions to the exchanges between the two universities, two cities, and even two countries. In the future, WHU will continue to support the development of the CIMR and thus promote steady and far-reaching cooperation.
Karen Shire also mentioned the solid foundation for the bilateral collaboration. She said that the founding of the CIMR was a new achievement in the recent cooperation and expressed her hope for both sides to deepen communication to enhance cultural exchanges, foster economic development, and promote technological innovation.
Susanne Löhr, manager of the CIMR, then shared the work report for 2023. The committee also discussed other issues, including the work plan for 2024 and educational exchange programs. Constructive suggestions were made and accepted during the meeting, aimed at strengthening the long-term cooperation between the two universities.

Officials from WHU’s Office of International Affairs, the School of Foreign Language and Literature, the School of Chinese Language and Literature and the CIMR attended the meeting.
The two universities first agreed on the joint development of a CI in 2007 And, on November 6, 2009, the CIMR was officially inaugurated.
