Delegation of the British ambassador to China visits WHU

On December 14, Caroline Wilson, British ambassador to China led the delegation to visit Wuhan University (WHU). Delegates were received by Li Fei, Vice President of WHU. Leaders of the Office of International Affairs of WHU also attended the meeting.

President Li introduced the long history and historical buildings of WHU to the delegation. He pointed out that as a key comprehensive university under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education, WHU ranks top nationwide and even worldwide in some research fields, such as Remote Sensing, Geophysics, Library Science, and Information and Archive Management. When it came to the cooperation with British universities, Li Fei mentioned that WHU and the University of Aberdeen have jointly founded a Confucius Institute. Additionally, WHU has strengthened WHU-Dundee cooperative education programs, which are significant and beneficial to both sides.

Wu Ruolan highly appreciated the achievements WHU had made, and wished that more Chinese outstanding professors and students would go to Britain for study and exchanges. She mentioned that at Oxford University, there is an Oxford China Center, which is a new hub for various academic activities relating to China.

Li and Wu also shared views on the recovery of Wuhan after COVID-2019. Both sides agreed that universities should improve the research on epidemic prevention and control. In the near future, WHU would integrate the strengths and advantages of several WHU’s affiliated hospitals, State Key Lab of Virology and the College of Life Sciences to strengthen relevant research.

After the meeting, the delegation went to Wanlin Art Museum, where the delegation had a conversation with Zou Wei, Professor of Economics and Management School, on the macroeconomic development.

Afterward, Wu shared her views on women career development with student representatives from the Gender Association of WHU, which is dedicated to the study of women’s development and empowerment.

It is known that WHU has signed agreements on mutual exchanges and cooperation with 24 British universities. The main forms and key projects include student exchanges and joint training, scientific research cooperation, Chinese-foreign cooperative education programs, Confucius Institute, and China-UK Humanities Alliance for Higher Education.
